My journey to health found it's Genesis in December of 2018 following a doctor's appointment for a shoulder injury I sustained while managing the Christmas Tree Lot, a youth ministry fund raiser for FBC Wilmington. Like all doctor's visits I was asked my weight. There was no scale available so they just had to take my word for it. I told the doctor I weighed 200 lbs. Not being one who lived and died by the scale that was my best guess. However, I was curious how much I actually weighed. The next morning I got up and weighed myself on our bathroom scale. The reading that came back was all the motivation I needed to make a change. When I stepped on the scale that morning it showed that I weighed 210 lbs! This represents the heaviest I have ever been.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I have never been big on New Year's resolutions. Everyone's favorite "I want to lose weight," had never been much help to me. However, given the time of year it seemed that resolutions were on everyone's mind. Around this same time we had a discussion in staff meeting about a word that we would adopt for our company for 2019. I liked the idea of choosing a theme word for the year and decided I would adopt a word for myself: Health. I knew that I wanted to lose weight, but I wanted it to be about more than just a number on a scale. I needed to make sure that my efforts would be sustainable.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C73ijCjju2g/XKEn6bJbkzI/AAAAAAAANkQ/cN2g5x7PVbQIGchzdWP8GWg20tcDX0VQQCEwYBhgL/s1600/Before%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-C73ijCjju2g/XKEn6bJbkzI/AAAAAAAANkQ/cN2g5x7PVbQIGchzdWP8GWg20tcDX0VQQCEwYBhgL/s320/Before%2B3.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Another Christmas pic with my brothers.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I really didn't know what I was doing. I set a goal of losing twenty pounds. That seemed like a reasonable number and relying on the common refrain of the resolutions seemed to be a common number as well. I had an idea of where I was aiming. Now, I needed a plan to get there. For our whole marriage Becca has been a calorie counter, although not to the extreme I have become, so I knew that calories would be an important piece of the puzzle. I think my laser-focus in this area will lessen as I become more accustomed to this new lifestyle and listening to my body. I also knew that I needed to change my activity level. I was a cross-country runner in high school and a lover of hobby sports (volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, basketball, softball, golf, etc.) I knew that I needed to be more active than my current situation. With this very general plan in place I set off on my journey to health.<br />

With built in pedometer, activity tracker, calorie counter (input and expenditure), and weight management features I had all the tools I needed in the palm of my hands. This app has been one of the keys to my success! I was able to set a weight goal and receive the recommended calorie intake based on my expected outcome. I track all the meals and snacks I eat, record my exercises, and keep track of the amount of water I drink (still working on this one).<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Within the first week of simply paying attention to what I was eating and controlling the size of the portions I lost about 10 pounds! Some may say that is really quick. I think it has more to do with my previous level of unhealth (poor eating decisions and lack of activity). As the saying goes, "Knowledge is power." I am so thankful that many restaurants now have calories listed on their menus. This has made ordering much easier to manage. It also cued me to consider whether I should finish the meal in one sitting or eat half at the restaurant and make two meals out of it by taking the other half home. Going into a meal pre-planning to take half home made it much easier to begin to recognize cues from my body that I actually already full half way through the meal!<br />
I must say the first couple of weeks were the hardest. This is probably where lot of people throw in the towel. The dietary adjustments are too much. The scale isn't moving, You hit an early plateau and can't seem to get over the hump. My advice is: Keep Going! My body and mind were used to a certain amount and a certain kind of food. I was limiting calories and steering clear of high fat items. At first, my stomach didn't like that! By the end of the first month I had already reached my goal of losing 20 pounds! Because the commitment I made to myself was for improved health not just a target on the scale I set a new goal. 180 became the new target.<br />
It was about this time that some people noticed that I was looking slimmer. Believe me that is great motivation, especially when I had about a week where there was no change in weight despite remaining disciplined to the plan. Some people tried to guess what kind of diet I was on or asked what I was doing. I would always reply the same way. "I'm not doing much; just counting calories, making better food choices and running/walking some." When they started asking for more details I began to realize that I was implementing quite a few things at once. Again, for me it has never been so much about a number on the scale as it is overall health. Here is a list of what I have maintained since January:<br />
<br />
1. Don't drink calories! (By far my biggest sacrifice has been giving up sweet tea!)<br />
2. Portion Control (Most American restaurant meals can easily be split with a friend or two meals for yourself.)<br />
3. Limit fried foods (Notice I didn't say eliminate; balance is key)<br />
4. Count your calories (Knowledge is Power and a caloric food log is eye opening)<br />
5. Running/walking every day (I have settled in to about 4 mi/day)<br />
6. Push ups to tone arms<br />
7. Sit ups/crunches to tone stomach<br />
8. Be realistic (Treat yourself when you achieve goals, recognize you won't lose everyday).<br />
9. Weigh yourself every morning (maintain a close feedback loop)<br />
<br />
Initially, I limited myself to around 1500 calories, shunned all sweets, and resisted late night snacking. By the end of February I had reached my second goal of 180 pounds. I knew I still had some work to do in my mid-section so I set a third goal of 175 pounds. After my initial goals were met I began to relax my restrictions a bit in order find the sweet spot of maintenance. I am now regularly eating 1900-2100 calories a day depending on my activity level for the day. Copious amounts of chips and crackers have been replaced with fruit and more reasonable amounts of Wheat Thins and hummus as snacks. More and more people have noticed and commented on my weight loss.<br />
<br />

I do know that so far my efforts have been successful! As of this morning I have lost 40 pounds in 3 months! I am very pleased to announce that as of this morning I am just under 170 pounds! I guarantee I have not seen this side of 170 since high school.<br />

Here's to your health!<br />

It is nice to have the mix of those with experience having been out here before and those who come with fresh eyes gaining a new knowledge. For those of us that have been before these trips have become a wonderful reconnection with old friends. For those who who are new it is a refreshing introduction to a simpler, harder, more beautiful way of life and being. We learn so much while we are here about respect for the earth, the animals, and each other. We offer friendship and encouragement to a group of people who don't or haven't always receive/d that from the "white" people they know or have known. We hear stories of racism against the Lakota and other Indians and it infuriates me. But, then it causes me to pause and reflect, to ask myself are there people in my own life on whom I knowingly or unknowingly inflict the same kind of pain. Are there people or people groups whom I unfairly judge before taking the time to get to know them? Are they Republicans or Democrats? Are they black, white, or other? Are they rich or poor? Are they from another Christian denomination or do they have another religious belief system entirely? Are they gay? Are they too young or too old? Too many times I know I can say I have judged someone before I have even gotten to know them and hear their story. Shame on me! I must do better. If you can think of times when you have done the same then, shame on you too. We MUST recognize all people as children of God because they are. We must recognize all people as worthy of our time and effort because they are. We must recognize all people regardless of socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, age, race, creed, or religious belief as people and not categories; as individuals not a group; and as someone who can teach us instead of the other way around. I think there is a natural respect for a teacher. If we view all people as our teachers we might actually learn something. We should talk less and listen more. We should ask questions then be quiet and listen for the answers. Who knows? God might use others to teach us a thing or two. ;) ! I didn't mean for that to be so heavy, but these blogs are a way for me to decompress and reflect on the days and the week we've had. Thanks for bearing with me!<div><br></div><div> Yesterday was our sightseeing day. We drove from Bridger after saying, "We'll see you later" (there is no word in the Lakota language for good-bye). We drove through The Badlands and the National Buffalo Grassland. Unfortunately, we did not see any Tatanka (buffalo) this year, but we did see groundhogs and Big horn sheep. We went to Mt. Rushmore and The Crazy Horse memorial and museum.</div><div><br></div><div> My prayer as we re-enter our normal routines is that we do not forget the lessons we have learned this week, that we do not forget the friends we have made and the struggles they deal with on a daily basis, and that we continue to lift them up in prayer.</div><div><br></div><div> A picture may be worth a thousand words, but even our words cannot capture the beauty of these people or this land. We arrived at the beginning of the week with a platform and some very basic guidelines for the new structure. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TlZe84D5zZs/Vanfk0t7NVI/AAAAAAAAMh8/LKPkCAs9ln0/s640/blogger-image--1053285166.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-TlZe84D5zZs/Vanfk0t7NVI/AAAAAAAAMh8/LKPkCAs9ln0/s640/blogger-image--1053285166.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> It's had been mentioned to me that it wou be great if we work on the walls while we here as that would be the next step in the process. I accepted the challenge and began work on the structure on Monday after consulting my resident construction guru, Allen Hardin, via text and email. Chip pulled up a YouTube video as well. Work started slow as we were also asked to mow a few lawns in the area after getting the lawn mowers working. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z6ylbBLldPw/Vaihiv83MJI/AAAAAAAAMdg/3lYW0dib5K4/s640/blogger-image--1808938835.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z6ylbBLldPw/Vaihiv83MJI/AAAAAAAAMdg/3lYW0dib5K4/s640/blogger-image--1808938835.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oioH9yp-T08/VanfrpuqRPI/AAAAAAAAMiM/HEFXgrk3VLw/s640/blogger-image--690758996.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oioH9yp-T08/VanfrpuqRPI/AAAAAAAAMiM/HEFXgrk3VLw/s640/blogger-image--690758996.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Eventually, as we got our act together so did the building begin taking shape. We got our "test" wall up and were easy to begin getting to the serious work.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MwnV73cNvsY/VanfuuH89MI/AAAAAAAAMiU/__XHTR7OFsI/s640/blogger-image-422936226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MwnV73cNvsY/VanfuuH89MI/AAAAAAAAMiU/__XHTR7OFsI/s640/blogger-image-422936226.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Things really got cooking by the end of the week. On Thursday the grass was mostly cut. Emory and James went up to Debbie Day's to do her yard. Chip was chafe ring them while also running to the store, getting gas, and talking a bit with Debbie after he dropped the guys off. Meanwhile back at the church, Chiles and I continued working on the addition and to the second wall ready to be. Raised by noon. Chip went to go pick up the lawn mowing men and with their help we got the wall up.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fyyBLdBBpsk/VanfxkHT5zI/AAAAAAAAMic/pzqvf4uycQc/s640/blogger-image--544683045.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fyyBLdBBpsk/VanfxkHT5zI/AAAAAAAAMic/pzqvf4uycQc/s640/blogger-image--544683045.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hBRJq-xTYsI/VanfoejDh-I/AAAAAAAAMiE/ZZuJu72mXew/s640/blogger-image--1287655093.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hBRJq-xTYsI/VanfoejDh-I/AAAAAAAAMiE/ZZuJu72mXew/s640/blogger-image--1287655093.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i3do9xpKjJA/VanfaClKM-I/AAAAAAAAMhk/6fd0eyT7CoA/s640/blogger-image--81975169.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i3do9xpKjJA/VanfaClKM-I/AAAAAAAAMhk/6fd0eyT7CoA/s640/blogger-image--81975169.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> As it was nearing 3:00 on Thursday and the second wall was now in place Chip asked if we would attempt the third wall. Very soon we were calling all those around to participate in the raising of the final wall of the addition! After dinner we had a time of sharing what we had seen God do this week. There were some great stories of mutual respect and mutual giving and receiving of ourselves and our individual gifts. Folks from the community shared stories and songs with us. We also had a wiping of the tears ceremony for one of our new friends from Texas who has had three deaths of very significant people on her life in the last 6 months. Byron also blessed the new room by smudging it before we began the ceremony.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Toni was sharing with me earlier in the evening about how she plans to lay out the room to accommodate the quilting machine. They got back to the church about 2 in the morning. Needless to say this morning got off to a bit of a slower start. Chip, of course, was the first one up and began digging holes for the support posts for the wall. When I got up I dug most of the second hole and got the wall ready to be raised. When the guys got up we all worked together to get the wall secured into place. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><font color="#000000" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oxugWwJEnQg/VadDJhSILwI/AAAAAAAAMcI/eUvRF9D_do0/s640/blogger-image-1471461386.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oxugWwJEnQg/VadDJhSILwI/AAAAAAAAMcI/eUvRF9D_do0/s640/blogger-image-1471461386.jpg"></a></font></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Then, Chip took Emory, Chiles, and James up to Sylvester and Deena's to finish mowing the grass. While they were gone the rest of the team did the needed chores around the church until some of the kids showed up around lunchtime. Anna came back. Today we also got to see our old friends Aleika, LaQwan, and Dawson whom we haven't seen all week. Joy has done a great job this week with meal preparation and execution. I appreciate also all that Jane, Jackson, and Paula have done in straightening up, cleaning up, and entertaining our guests that have come each day. Joy not only takes care of us, but here you see her getting water to the chickens. (Chiles got 54 eggs from the coop today!) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VsH_HwQKu7o/VadFEywOARI/AAAAAAAAMck/wEmY4feHOKI/s640/blogger-image-135358471.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-VsH_HwQKu7o/VadFEywOARI/AAAAAAAAMck/wEmY4feHOKI/s640/blogger-image-135358471.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Chip and I had cut the studs to length for the second wall while we were waiting for the guys to wake up. So, while they were all up the hill I framed up the second wall. Marvin was concerned that I would not be in any pictures so he came out to catch me working!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JeQDGXlRicg/VadFKrs0O5I/AAAAAAAAMc0/j3GzdWSFnYM/s640/blogger-image--803283900.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JeQDGXlRicg/VadFKrs0O5I/AAAAAAAAMc0/j3GzdWSFnYM/s640/blogger-image--803283900.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> I wanted to return the favor so when Rodger and Tameka took Debbie (from Houston), Marvin, and Savanna on a horse ride I wanted to be sure I got a picture of it. They all did very well on the ride. Rodger took them on a trail ride up to the ridge where they could oversee the valley. Of all the views I have seen looking into the valley is one of my favorites.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YyEjrYQltes/VadFHpUcnEI/AAAAAAAAMcs/f3hMnCeA0TA/s640/blogger-image--2128198507.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YyEjrYQltes/VadFHpUcnEI/AAAAAAAAMcs/f3hMnCeA0TA/s640/blogger-image--2128198507.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Tonight we got to enjoy the spoils of the fisher people's labor as Rodger and Victoria brought the cleaned and filleted catfish from the night before to fry as part of dinner. He made up his own spices and it was very good. Joy supplemented with chicken strips and hush puppies that were all fried right on the tailgate of Rodger's truck.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bq1ia_1apf8/VadDXuPsCjI/AAAAAAAAMcQ/xyb4ECglavs/s640/blogger-image-798775206.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bq1ia_1apf8/VadDXuPsCjI/AAAAAAAAMcQ/xyb4ECglavs/s640/blogger-image-798775206.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Chip and I went to Pierre this afternoon to get a few lawn mower parts. It seems that the ministry of the lawnmower is never ending. Perhaps it is becoming a ministry to the lawnmower! This was my first time to Pierre. While we were away we saw the effects of some pretty damaging winds that they have experienced recently. The drive to Pierre consists of driving through or by many farms. Several of the silos had been severely damaged if not ripped right from their foundations like tin cans. It is pretty crazy to see the degree of damage that wind can do. The land is not necessarily flat, but you can still see for miles in any direction. Words and pictures do not do justice to the beauty we have seen in God's creation. A camera lens especially and even our human eyes can scarcely take it all in.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> When we returned to Bridger there was quite a crowd already gathered. Byron and Toni had come down earlier and Byron had erected a tipi with the help of Chiles and others on the church property. It made for a beautiful foreground for the sunset picture below. Again, the camera lens fails to capture the full beauty of God's handiwork.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3qcGwhkIzZE/VadDkgPxcoI/AAAAAAAAMcY/HWu64EgNTzE/s640/blogger-image--324484773.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3qcGwhkIzZE/VadDkgPxcoI/AAAAAAAAMcY/HWu64EgNTzE/s640/blogger-image--324484773.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">"Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Chip was the first to rise to get <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">the coffee pot going for his coffee and our early morning visit from Eric (Hermas). He then set out to work on the lawnmower to get it going for the day. As it turns out he was able to work on it off and on throughout the day and finally got it working this afternoon probably better than it has been in years. I continued work on the wall with James' help. Tomorrow we should raise a wall and starting building another. The gentlemen from St. Dunston's will be coming by tomorrow afternoon when after they finish the repairs on the medical clinic in Takini. That will be a big boost to get these walls up. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> Joy and Savannah went on a horse ride to the river with Rodger while Eric helped Paula ride around the round corral on the church property.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gUatA5JiQdA/VaXvql0lixI/AAAAAAAAMag/NosggVJKqp8/s640/blogger-image--136577141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gUatA5JiQdA/VaXvql0lixI/AAAAAAAAMag/NosggVJKqp8/s640/blogger-image--136577141.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> The guys rode up to Sylvester and Deena's to help him mow his grass. We also removed the blades from the riding mower in order to sharpen them, brought them back to the church to sharpen them and returned to help mow only to be called back to lunch when our stomachs rumbled. They will return up the hill tomorrow to work on their yard, retrieve the riding mower and go to Debbie Day's to work a little on her grass.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9nMCfAf3jSI/VaXwxAf5XVI/AAAAAAAAMbY/ovVxIyulEj0/s640/blogger-image-955064427.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9nMCfAf3jSI/VaXwxAf5XVI/AAAAAAAAMbY/ovVxIyulEj0/s640/blogger-image-955064427.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Sylvester mowing his grass</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eQMyOgqrUf0/VaXwuasbpHI/AAAAAAAAMbQ/48IDwrZPvzE/s640/blogger-image--1864202211.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eQMyOgqrUf0/VaXwuasbpHI/AAAAAAAAMbQ/48IDwrZPvzE/s640/blogger-image--1864202211.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0_3NFWwAsug/VaXwl6wX1iI/AAAAAAAAMa4/ijRAyxG2bxw/s640/blogger-image--600262101.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0_3NFWwAsug/VaXwl6wX1iI/AAAAAAAAMa4/ijRAyxG2bxw/s640/blogger-image--600262101.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Chiles and Emory working on the blades of the red mower and the blade housing of the John Deere.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Tonight Chiles, James, Savannah, Emory, and Jackson went with Rodger and Tameka to the river to fish for catfish. The sun typically comes up around 4:30 or 5:00. Chip was up with the sun and ready to begin work for the day. Our first order of business was to get the lawn mower working so Chiles, Emory, and James could finish mowing the grass around the church. Chip was able to make a slight adjustment without having to wait for a single tool or part and they were off and running. Jane, savannah, and Jackson were working to clean up the fellowship hall (aka our sleeping/eating/hanging out area) to be ready for our guests that would come for the cookout tonight. We also found out that we would be joined by the group from St. Dunston's Episcopal Church in Houston. Paula and Joy drove to Faith to get some needed groceries and supplies. The Texas group arrived about noon, ate lunch with us, and made preparations for a small store of sorts that they would set up after dinner on the porch. They went up to Takini to announce our presence and invite the folks to dinner at the school tomorrow night. They fell in love with him and I know that he had a blast with them as well. It has been a true blessing to be here at the same time as them this week. For the last couple of years we have been one or two weeks ahead or behind them. After dinner tonight they presented Byron with a saddle to be used as part of the horsemanship program. Unfortunately I missed the presentation so I was unable to provide you with a picture. I did catch some of the story though. Apparently, they stopped by a church in Rapid City on Sunday for worship. They met a couple that attends there and got into a conversation about what they would be doing this week. The gentleman got one of his saddles for the team to bring. It was a true God-moment as the team was not to planning to attend that particular service and the gentleman and his wife alternate weekends between the Catholic Church and the Episcopal Church. They were excited to be able to present the saddle on behalf of the Rapid City church.</div></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ho4Wt71oXvY/VaSZqzC_pWI/AAAAAAAAMY8/homgO1G5gcw/s640/blogger-image-1270464139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Ho4Wt71oXvY/VaSZqzC_pWI/AAAAAAAAMY8/homgO1G5gcw/s640/blogger-image-1270464139.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PAMZBrwU_Pg/VaSZyGV_a0I/AAAAAAAAMZE/PMm1puEjMgE/s640/blogger-image-1907970470.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PAMZBrwU_Pg/VaSZyGV_a0I/AAAAAAAAMZE/PMm1puEjMgE/s640/blogger-image-1907970470.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Our dinner tonight consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, and fried chicken. We were able to connect with old friends as well as meet some we people. That continues to be the theme as we share meals with one another. Take a moment to pray for Toni Buffalo. Early this morning one of her former students committed suicide. This is the fourth teenager in about 7 months and these one in less than a week. We shared a tender conversation this evening where she voiced her grief for the families and the young ones and those still living who feel such desperation that suicide seems to be the only way out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We are having a great week and all are well!</div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div>Andy Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05699464285573110193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991987357359190012.post-82911861131701981062015-07-13T00:04:00.001-04:002015-07-13T00:04:11.112-04:00Project Assessment<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Today we started checking things out around the church to see what we could do and what we may need to go buy in order to accomplish some of the many tasks. The guys began working on the grass around the church and the fire pit. We assessed the situation of the addition to the building, the lawn mowers, and prepared the grill to cook tonight. After we made our preparations we had lunch and left for the pow wow in Dupree. We saw Byron and Toni and several of our other friends who we will cross paths with this week. Enjoy these pictures from the pow wow (opening ceremonies, open dance, drum circle, and one of the men's head dresses).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eilU5iqLBwA/VaM4b7xIJfI/AAAAAAAAMX4/JGpF9bWFjg4/s640/blogger-image-80512319.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eilU5iqLBwA/VaM4b7xIJfI/AAAAAAAAMX4/JGpF9bWFjg4/s640/blogger-image-80512319.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nlFl3UDY8ZE/VaM4jYylY3I/AAAAAAAAMYI/OexA4ee5I8I/s640/blogger-image--755253516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nlFl3UDY8ZE/VaM4jYylY3I/AAAAAAAAMYI/OexA4ee5I8I/s640/blogger-image--755253516.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c8yvhqr3UfI/VaM4mx0NU4I/AAAAAAAAMYQ/8Pod5OeFfDg/s640/blogger-image-944964047.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c8yvhqr3UfI/VaM4mx0NU4I/AAAAAAAAMYQ/8Pod5OeFfDg/s640/blogger-image-944964047.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hl3CerCowC0/VaM4uaKuVrI/AAAAAAAAMYg/emFzKTsNTXM/s640/blogger-image--1438871140.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-hl3CerCowC0/VaM4uaKuVrI/AAAAAAAAMYg/emFzKTsNTXM/s640/blogger-image--1438871140.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> On our way back to the church several of us went to the river (my second visit with a second group). We enjoyed skipping rocks and looking at the beauty of God's creation.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5dzmz0wIDSc/VaM4qahj-CI/AAAAAAAAMYY/QBUiOGX6CFc/s640/blogger-image--1473958641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-5dzmz0wIDSc/VaM4qahj-CI/AAAAAAAAMYY/QBUiOGX6CFc/s640/blogger-image--1473958641.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bZE-Ce8BI7s/VaM4feWqGQI/AAAAAAAAMYA/2dLu-MZVfjM/s640/blogger-image--1009498443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bZE-Ce8BI7s/VaM4feWqGQI/AAAAAAAAMYA/2dLu-MZVfjM/s640/blogger-image--1009498443.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We had a great meal tonight where we were joined by several members of the community including Rodger, Victoria, Tameka, Lanaia, Makai, and Uncle Ben (as they all call him). I predict our meal times from this point forward will be full of laughter, stories, and deeper connection as several members of the community often come to join us to enjoy table fellowship.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Chip has a list of items that we need to purchase in Faith. He will further assess the riding lawnmower tomorrow to determine what is needed in order for it to run. We will also begin work on the building addition. We were able to talk to Mike Lassiter this afternoon and get squared away on what is here, what is coming, and the plans are for the space. As we always do we will be prepared to stop work as folk from the community stop by. I also hope that we will be. Able to encourage some of them to join us in the work at hand.</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div>Andy Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05699464285573110193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991987357359190012.post-29104470129654759222015-07-12T00:03:00.001-04:002015-07-12T00:04:20.232-04:00On the ground in Bridger, South Dakota.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> You know the old saying, "You can't get there from here?" It doesn't apply to Bridger any more! After three years we finally figured out the secret to getting here. After our great ride on the people mover from Randy Gossert and Master's Transportation Ministry we checked our bags curbside and breezed through security as easy as you please. Joy called to check on us (she and Chiles had flown out on Thursday) and that was when the wheels started to come off. As soon as Chip hung up the phone the announcement came over the loud speaker that our pilot was not here and it would be an hour and a half before he would get to the plane. What? Really? Luckily, within ten minutes we found out that it was actually the first officer that had been missing and another had been located and we would begin the boarding process very soon. After that brief twenty minute delay we were taxiing to the runway for take off. An uneventful flight later and we were all loaded up with our luggage and ready to hit Sam's, Wal-mart, and lunch. Here we are pictured in front of the Rapid City airport as fresh as we can be and ready for a great week of ministry and relationship building.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zGglAIBNOFY/VaHnDNrWlrI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/K0GCdZt0alI/s640/blogger-image-1876926171.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zGglAIBNOFY/VaHnDNrWlrI/AAAAAAAAMXQ/K0GCdZt0alI/s640/blogger-image-1876926171.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> After the grocery run we loaded the two SUVs to head to Bridger. Realizing we forgot the retried beans for supper we stopped off at Coyle's Supervalu in Phillip, SD. This was a great little store located right off the Main Street. Our limited inventory grocery stop was a step back in time. It reminded me of visits to Morgan's Superette in Martin, GA on those summer visits to my grandparents house.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6cW5FiqErvw/VaHnGneTmFI/AAAAAAAAMXY/4eSUZl1Rfw8/s640/blogger-image--1414616665.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6cW5FiqErvw/VaHnGneTmFI/AAAAAAAAMXY/4eSUZl1Rfw8/s640/blogger-image--1414616665.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> The team had a wonderful dinner and are all settling down as I post this blog. We are eager to reconnect with our old friends and continue the work to which we have been called. We have two main projects for the week with other things that will come up while we are here. We are prepared to offer fun reinforcements in math and reading to the children as we interact with them this week. I am also excited to be a part of the building project here at the church. We are adding on a room to the fellowship hall which will allow for larger community meetings and provide opportunities for larger groups to stay and minister here in Bridger. As always we are reminded that relationships are the most important and I pray that I, for one, will stop the work long enough to connect with our Lakota brothers and sisters.</div>Andy Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05699464285573110193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991987357359190012.post-30051460769257374762015-05-19T19:17:00.001-04:002015-05-19T20:02:08.610-04:00Working on a porch, day 2 The team of Page and Jimmy Fulgham, Bob Jernigan, and Marc Beaver accepted two new members today. Jeff Badke and I joined them to work on the roof over a porch that a Smoke Rise crew had worked on back in October. We got the braces placed as well as the support pieces for the metal roof that we will put on tomorrow. We had a bit of a snafu as the metal shop was not able to cut any metal this morning. This afternoon the metal was delivered to the site. It will be ready for us to complete in the morning.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ouisUQRM_WM/VVvEhUH9vKI/AAAAAAAALzw/GUK57SGNIJk/s640/blogger-image--1938716635.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ouisUQRM_WM/VVvEhUH9vKI/AAAAAAAALzw/GUK57SGNIJk/s640/blogger-image--1938716635.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-R0UBaGFOALY/VVvEWWRjUrI/AAAAAAAALzY/FXpkx5DITzc/s640/blogger-image--349621904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-R0UBaGFOALY/VVvEWWRjUrI/AAAAAAAALzY/FXpkx5DITzc/s640/blogger-image--349621904.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X7IQU4Up6jY/VVvEaajj7gI/AAAAAAAALzg/cRluAC1G8fQ/s640/blogger-image-1807572141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X7IQU4Up6jY/VVvEaajj7gI/AAAAAAAALzg/cRluAC1G8fQ/s640/blogger-image-1807572141.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rFkYnkFVzEM/VVvEdh_eMWI/AAAAAAAALzo/vPltcwExZ9g/s640/blogger-image--925851274.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-rFkYnkFVzEM/VVvEdh_eMWI/AAAAAAAALzo/vPltcwExZ9g/s640/blogger-image--925851274.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> In the meantime we were able to come back to the lodge and work on the door to the shed. So we watched as he made quick work of the door.</div><br></div> The other teams were making progress on their projects as well. The bathroom project hit a few snags along the way as is typical of bathrooms. They had to do more floor repair than they had expected. They should be able to seat the toilet and attach the tub tomorrow to finish that project.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> The window team went to their second house today to remove and replace several windows and a double sliding door. He headed back to Frankfurt this afternoon.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Tonight the team was treated to supper from Nancy Gibson. She is lady that lives down the holler from the Lodge. Smoke Rise worked on her kitchen on one of their first trips up to McDowell. Since then she has cooked for the team each time they come up. This has been a great week of work and fellowship.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Continue to pray for the team's safety as we work on the various projects. They finished one project and began a second window project this afternoon. The third construction project was to build a roof over a porch that Smoke Rise had built on their last trip in October. Tonight John Morris, director of the GAP, shared with the team the vision of GAP, the focus for the year, and a little about each family whom we will be serving this week. I appreciate the leadership and the focus that they are putting on the relationships that can be built with the families and the impact the teams can have beyond the scope of the work projects.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Tomorrow we will start our day unloading the Penske truck pictured above, a Uhaul from Smoke Rise, and a trailer from Smoke Rise filled with furniture for the sale. After we unload the teams will break out and go to the various work sites. We covet your prayers this week for our safety on the work sites. We also pray for the families we will be working with. Pray for opportunities to share our faith with our words and show our faith with our hands.</div>Andy Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05699464285573110193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991987357359190012.post-43686186161504460392015-04-28T12:37:00.000-04:002015-04-29T15:36:36.217-04:00Guatemala Mamas<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The team finally arrived via a circuitous route at 8:24 on Sunday Morning. They had a day to enjoy the country, the market, and the people. Their week of loving and serving the children began on Monday. You can follow their progress and updates at https://orphansheart.org/blog/ Be sure to click on the Guatemala team updates. Below is my comment and prayer for the Guatemala mamas as they serve this week.<br />
<br />
To all the Guatemala mamas from FBC Augusta. I am so thankful for you! Thank you for your flexibility in travel and planning. Thank you for your willing spirit. Thank you for the work you have already done to provide for your families while you are away. We are praying for a great trip where God uses you as God’s hands and feet. May you be blessed by the unconditional love you receive from those precious children of God. May you return home changed. I pray that you will become catalysts for change in your own families, or church, and community. I can’t wait to see and hear what God will do through you and in you! Press on, Andy<br />

As we completed our week of dental ministry last month many on the team donated what Limpiras they had left for Ernie and Allison to use as would best benefit the ministry. Today we received a great email from Allison detailing what has been done with that money. I hope you enjoy reading this litany of blessings as much as I did:<div>

We have been a team small in number, but big in heart and strong in labor. We have been the grunt workers for the skilled laborers in masonry (finishing the inside and outside of the house), carpentry (putting the roof on the house), and in laying the foundation. We have all received our pile-it licenses this week as we have been told to "pile it here" and "pile it there" with stone and sand. <div><br></div><div> The start of our great day was actually last night when a thunderstorm came through and brought with it much rain, but also cooler temperatures. This morning we had this view from the roof of our compound of the beautiful sunrise. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GyrP8cbm3AA/VDmyhkg_VVI/AAAAAAAAJGE/_k46IiIJelU/s640/blogger-image--950394518.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GyrP8cbm3AA/VDmyhkg_VVI/AAAAAAAAJGE/_k46IiIJelU/s640/blogger-image--950394518.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We got to enjoy my favorite Haitian breakfast by far of bread and chocolate soup.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-150g5-zZDa8/VDmyZq3LexI/AAAAAAAAJF0/2fjusXLOLfM/s640/blogger-image-1075204482.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-150g5-zZDa8/VDmyZq3LexI/AAAAAAAAJF0/2fjusXLOLfM/s640/blogger-image-1075204482.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We took a short walk over to the Siloe Baptist Church and school where local artisans/ craft dealers had set up. <b><i>Come to the Mission Banquet at FBC Augusta on Nov. 2nd to purchase some of these wares</i></b>! Then we got to enjoy a fun afternoon at the beach. Pastor Linh decided that the "pile-it" license wasn't enough and he went for his captain's license as well. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rGgO_j57gJQ/VDmyVb4fJUI/AAAAAAAAJFs/QR9H6QX8hxE/s640/blogger-image--396350001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rGgO_j57gJQ/VDmyVb4fJUI/AAAAAAAAJFs/QR9H6QX8hxE/s640/blogger-image--396350001.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Our beach time concluded with some succulent lobster that only an hour or so before had been pulled from the beautiful blue waters above. And keep those here in Haiti in your prayers as will we. I can tell some improvement from the last time we were here, but this country still has a long way to go.</div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div>Andy Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05699464285573110193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991987357359190012.post-35268743028494972932014-10-11T08:09:00.001-04:002014-10-11T08:09:48.031-04:00It's a great day to be a DAWG! Even in the midst of an investigation into the alleged NCAA rule violations and the resulting suspension of UGA running back, Todd Gurley, it is still a great day to be a DAWG. I and many others have often referred to Athens and the rest of the Bulldawg Nation as God's country. Never more did I believe it to be true than when we arrived in Haiti. You will see a picture of the tap-tap that was parked at the compound earlier in the week. When we asked the question, "who was the Georgia fan?" we were met with confused looks. "Georgia fan?" came the reply. "That is God's symbol!"<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6n-zTir8OKQ/VDkeCVt8R5I/AAAAAAAAJFc/SxwzieA914E/s640/blogger-image--2125398531.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6n-zTir8OKQ/VDkeCVt8R5I/AAAAAAAAJFc/SxwzieA914E/s640/blogger-image--2125398531.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tum0siScsqI/VDkd98WWMYI/AAAAAAAAJFU/N9V5FAlam5A/s640/blogger-image--1206671006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tum0siScsqI/VDkd98WWMYI/AAAAAAAAJFU/N9V5FAlam5A/s640/blogger-image--1206671006.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">GO DAWGS! We assisted, Bennett, the CI foundation contractor and his crew. By assisting I mean we hauled sand for the mortar and rocks for the foundation. The home site was a bare patch of land. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7ENbBhugThk/VDhDHiJr1tI/AAAAAAAAJEg/Aeh-Oow4yo4/s640/blogger-image-893402612.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7ENbBhugThk/VDhDHiJr1tI/AAAAAAAAJEg/Aeh-Oow4yo4/s640/blogger-image-893402612.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div>The homeowner worked right alongside the crew today. We also had some other helpers as well. This little girl was doing what she could by carrying rocks. </div><div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k7wCauTM2Hg/VDhDdoe_BxI/AAAAAAAAJFA/Aj4NipYRfUE/s640/blogger-image-569325990.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k7wCauTM2Hg/VDhDdoe_BxI/AAAAAAAAJFA/Aj4NipYRfUE/s640/blogger-image-569325990.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Another young man a few years older than her was helping with some of the big rocks as well. We also had the added benefit today of a wheelbarrow. That is the first time all week we have had that. Once we got the rocks and the sand moved closer to the house we spread the rocks around the house as these would be used for the foundation.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-noTsv_HH2-Q/VDhDTHUN3WI/AAAAAAAAJEw/qyP8As9GFpM/s640/blogger-image-373568589.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-noTsv_HH2-Q/VDhDTHUN3WI/AAAAAAAAJEw/qyP8As9GFpM/s640/blogger-image-373568589.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-LFhSGnyCNAc/VDhDYJKZ52I/AAAAAAAAJE4/gcnHJHMvRiY/s640/blogger-image--808552522.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-LFhSGnyCNAc/VDhDYJKZ52I/AAAAAAAAJE4/gcnHJHMvRiY/s640/blogger-image--808552522.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> There is a big difference between working at a shaded site and a site that is all sun. We were all whooped by lunch today. To finish out our day early we worked hard for one last push right before lunch. We put the rocks around the edge of the foundation so the workers could more easily put them into place. As we have seen all week they were using the volcano method to mix the mortar. The foundation becomes a pretty sophisticated jigsaw puzzle. Today was the beginning of the 180th house that Conscience International has built.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-AdYhGdexrhI/VDhDjK2HGJI/AAAAAAAAJFI/AbFb9ej2pUQ/s640/blogger-image-1796471693.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-AdYhGdexrhI/VDhDjK2HGJI/AAAAAAAAJFI/AbFb9ej2pUQ/s640/blogger-image-1796471693.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-i5eLPLkzjU4/VDhDBGLklgI/AAAAAAAAJEY/Gj73tAaBDrY/s640/blogger-image-1895315557.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-i5eLPLkzjU4/VDhDBGLklgI/AAAAAAAAJEY/Gj73tAaBDrY/s640/blogger-image-1895315557.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nk9xky0nfVQ/VDhDNdtLf5I/AAAAAAAAJEo/FFaEw23D4h8/s640/blogger-image-1911055339.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nk9xky0nfVQ/VDhDNdtLf5I/AAAAAAAAJEo/FFaEw23D4h8/s640/blogger-image-1911055339.jpg"></a></div><br></div><br></div></div><br></div><br></div></div>Andy Joneshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05699464285573110193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1991987357359190012.post-4468217250695388292014-10-09T20:20:00.001-04:002014-10-09T20:20:25.226-04:00A home completed We started the day by surveying the work that had been accomplished in our absence yesterday. It really was quite a transformation with the finishing touches and porch on the outside and the poured floor on the inside.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xfz7gWAW3i8/VDcltCs05xI/AAAAAAAAJDA/KYngQK0VcyA/s640/blogger-image-1812657846.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xfz7gWAW3i8/VDcltCs05xI/AAAAAAAAJDA/KYngQK0VcyA/s640/blogger-image-1812657846.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1J0lwEonXTA/VDcl8rxBEwI/AAAAAAAAJDg/fC8zWmSRJW4/s640/blogger-image-1327178877.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1J0lwEonXTA/VDcl8rxBEwI/AAAAAAAAJDg/fC8zWmSRJW4/s640/blogger-image-1327178877.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WAQeD21E3jw/VDcmFBzipKI/AAAAAAAAJDw/Aodo9Gpddbc/s640/blogger-image--1128263776.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WAQeD21E3jw/VDcmFBzipKI/AAAAAAAAJDw/Aodo9Gpddbc/s640/blogger-image--1128263776.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Very soon the dump truck arrived with our supplies for the day. Typically the rubble house cages are fabricated here at the compound then transported to the home site once the foundation has been laid. So, after our breakfast sandwich(?) and hot Haitian slaw we sauntered the 30 yards or so parking lot just outside of our beautiful compound to get to work. </span></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RCYWfcZhlZY/VDWxopcGH8I/AAAAAAAAJCY/0u8w086XkCQ/s640/blogger-image--728114470.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RCYWfcZhlZY/VDWxopcGH8I/AAAAAAAAJCY/0u8w086XkCQ/s640/blogger-image--728114470.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> The basket guy's name is Greg. He was a little late arriving so we got started without him. The first step in the process is to roll out the 1/4" rebar sheets and cut to 18.5' lengths. Next, you flip the sheets over to press out their memory. Then, you line four of those with chicken wire using thin wire to wrap around the chicken wire and the cage. These will make the two long walls with windows. Once the windows are cut out you stand two of these wall pieces up opposing one another with the chicken wire on the inside. These two pieces are connected with 18" wide ribs giving strength to the wall.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-bIJ2aJ7JFl4/VDWxE_WDjxI/AAAAAAAAJBo/X4xXtsjGH7I/s640/blogger-image--1504009276.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-bIJ2aJ7JFl4/VDWxE_WDjxI/AAAAAAAAJBo/X4xXtsjGH7I/s640/blogger-image--1504009276.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o0vcC1TEhTo/VDWxXsc0d1I/AAAAAAAAJCA/FLo-RGrEyNU/s640/blogger-image-319868182.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o0vcC1TEhTo/VDWxXsc0d1I/AAAAAAAAJCA/FLo-RGrEyNU/s640/blogger-image-319868182.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> The tool used to connect the ribs to the walls is a great handmade tool. The one I used was a piece of slightly bent rebar with a small metal cylinder welded to the end just big enough to slide the rebar from the cage inside and use the leverage of the tool to bend the rib around the cage.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6dIkRi6LFco/VDWw93TNKHI/AAAAAAAAJBg/gkmZs1ESxfI/s640/blogger-image-182579010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6dIkRi6LFco/VDWw93TNKHI/AAAAAAAAJBg/gkmZs1ESxfI/s640/blogger-image-182579010.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dANXH3EigOI/VDWxikYuG8I/AAAAAAAAJCQ/Y36pQ-U6juI/s640/blogger-image--2013446867.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dANXH3EigOI/VDWxikYuG8I/AAAAAAAAJCQ/Y36pQ-U6juI/s640/blogger-image--2013446867.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We completed the long walls before lunch and begain on the short walls (with doors) after lunch. The short walls are composed of two small baskets each that will be connected at the top to form the doors. These baskets are constructed in similar manner with the chicken wire being attached to the insed and connected with the ribs. We had our responsibilities pretty well broken out today. Jeff, Wayne, and George were working on the chicken wire. Our interpreter, Jamale, and I were connecting the walls to the ribs, and Linh was Greg's assistant getting all of the above pieces ready for use. It seems that each of our locations Linh is very quickly identified as a hard worker.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SsYsS93OMgw/VDWxb0pVvjI/AAAAAAAAJCI/uOYVQCcDIcM/s640/blogger-image--564113660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SsYsS93OMgw/VDWxb0pVvjI/AAAAAAAAJCI/uOYVQCcDIcM/s640/blogger-image--564113660.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1PPmiHN9Fbs/VDWxTYs-wlI/AAAAAAAAJB4/Tc9wF1RNxJ8/s640/blogger-image--817798790.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1PPmiHN9Fbs/VDWxTYs-wlI/AAAAAAAAJB4/Tc9wF1RNxJ8/s640/blogger-image--817798790.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We had another treat this morning as well. Today started out early as all our days this week. We begin the day with breakfast served between 6 and 6:15. I have shared a brief morning thought for the day as we finish our breakfast and then we walk to the worksite. Today we had a traditional Haitian breakfast of a tuna fish hash and bread. It wasn't a favorite of the team, but my adventurous stomach and I liked it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kBGYF6zchcU/VDRuE8cVkLI/AAAAAAAAJBM/HL8_cOHmGKc/s640/blogger-image-1156469265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kBGYF6zchcU/VDRuE8cVkLI/AAAAAAAAJBM/HL8_cOHmGKc/s640/blogger-image-1156469265.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Our worksite for the first part of the week has only been a short walk around the block. When we arrived this morning we checked the work that had been completed after we left yesterday. They got the inside of the house done and were beginning to prep for the outside upon our arrival. Here Wayne Hardy is checking out the previous day's work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bGbJr9lakh8/VDRt07mZoHI/AAAAAAAAJAs/0k7L7U7x3Sg/s640/blogger-image--243955394.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-bGbJr9lakh8/VDRt07mZoHI/AAAAAAAAJAs/0k7L7U7x3Sg/s640/blogger-image--243955394.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Once the inside of the rubble house is mortared then the wooden frame on the outside can be removed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ob9TJIgl4DY/VDRuAu78KXI/AAAAAAAAJBE/cUOxy6uJDNY/s640/blogger-image-1720608220.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ob9TJIgl4DY/VDRuAu78KXI/AAAAAAAAJBE/cUOxy6uJDNY/s640/blogger-image-1720608220.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Everyone fell into our now familiar roles. While the Haitian masons were mixing and applying the mortar to the outside of the wall we went back to sifting rocks out of the sand that they would use in the mortar mixture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Remember the large pile of sand that was deposited yesterday? We had to finish getting all of that sand to the back of the house for the rest of the mortar. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

Word is that tomorrow we will build the frame for the next house to be built. Perhaps Thursday we'll be laying the foundation for that house and returning on Friday to roof the house we have been working on thus far. That is the plan as of today. But, if there is one thing I know about these plans it is that they can change.</div>

And that does NOT include loading rubble! Our task for the week will be assisting the masons as they put the mortar on the house and then helping to put the roof on the house as well. Depending on how much we are able to get done on the house we may also build the cages for the next house. The cages are made of small rebar covered with chicken wire and then filled with rubble. You can see the end of that process in The pictures below.<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ef9-DuyP0r4/VDMRNknte2I/AAAAAAAAI8c/kU0TSCmo_Qo/s640/blogger-image-2142327856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ef9-DuyP0r4/VDMRNknte2I/AAAAAAAAI8c/kU0TSCmo_Qo/s640/blogger-image-2142327856.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RIqUk0aX52U/VDMRQ06DjaI/AAAAAAAAI8k/dq6WVX745MI/s640/blogger-image--40021555.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-RIqUk0aX52U/VDMRQ06DjaI/AAAAAAAAI8k/dq6WVX745MI/s640/blogger-image--40021555.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> The picture above was one of the few times Pastor Linh was standing around, but as you can see even then he had a bucket in his hand. The Haitian workers enjoyed talking with him and working beside him as well. They were intrigued that he was from Vietnam Nam and were very interested in the details of his church. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Once the house gets to this point the next phase is to stucco inside and out. To do this one must sift the riiver sand that has deposited via dump truck and bucket brigade (for more on this process check the blogs from April 2012). We sifted sand today using a grill grate and the front of an oscillating fan.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DD9CcJblCGw/VDMRXxp3PTI/AAAAAAAAI80/zCFias5hxuU/s640/blogger-image-1047255225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-DD9CcJblCGw/VDMRXxp3PTI/AAAAAAAAI80/zCFias5hxuU/s640/blogger-image-1047255225.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HlwRg89i2oM/VDMRANZAxMI/AAAAAAAAI78/-6haQh3Z7Yc/s640/blogger-image-1112229135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-HlwRg89i2oM/VDMRANZAxMI/AAAAAAAAI78/-6haQh3Z7Yc/s640/blogger-image-1112229135.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> Once we had enough sand sifted we made a pile inside the house for the masons to begin inside. We loaded up the people mover this morning at 0-dark-thirty to head to Atlanta. Thank you to Randy Gossert at The Master's Transportation ministry for getting us to the airport while most of us caught a few extra zzzz's. Here is the crew riding in style.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ebD8c1Sprbc/VDHJfdK2D_I/AAAAAAAAI5o/MgNrXu2PZ8M/s640/blogger-image--994224193.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ebD8c1Sprbc/VDHJfdK2D_I/AAAAAAAAI5o/MgNrXu2PZ8M/s640/blogger-image--994224193.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> We didn't have any complications with the flights or our connection. The only flight issue we had was that George's peanut butter was confiscated. Apparently, he looked suspicious! Alas, no worries, tonight's supper was great. We had traditional rice and beans with a mild sauce and some fried chicken. notice the proportion of meat to the rest. This, I have come to find is also typical.<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-mUVD8qAEb1E/VDHJmvQ0scI/AAAAAAAAI54/n0HSy3vA0T4/s640/blogger-image-1839507159.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-mUVD8qAEb1E/VDHJmvQ0scI/AAAAAAAAI54/n0HSy3vA0T4/s640/blogger-image-1839507159.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-91KOZsb4OnA/VDHJjKYPzEI/AAAAAAAAI5w/RhvlInCi_TU/s640/blogger-image--1267425759.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-91KOZsb4OnA/VDHJjKYPzEI/AAAAAAAAI5w/RhvlInCi_TU/s640/blogger-image--1267425759.jpg"></a></div></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"> After an hour and a half ride from the airport we arrived at our home for the week. On our final night together our our two leaders David Dekle and Scott Wingard shared with the team the superlatives from the trip. These will probably mean more to the team than to anyone else, but even the inside jokes are funny. Enjoy!<br />

I don't mean to insult your intelligence as I'm sure you could and many of you already have added up the figures from the week. But, I want to do that here to show just how hard this team has worked. Over the course of this week we saw 307 patients. Our team performed 146 fillings, 387 extractions, 98 cleanings, and 36 teeth brushing instructions. There were an additional 37 patients seen (9 cleanings and 30 brushing instructions) seen at the Mission on the Move facility. Ruth cleaned the teeth of the staff and the team demonstrated for and taught the children how to brush their teeth.</div><div><br></div><div> I hope you have been blessed by the pictures and the stories found here.
